As part of the measures to reduce crimes and develop a massive integrated monitoring system, the Greater Chennai police will soon install 1716 CCTV cameras in various neighbourhoods across the city for 24x7 surveillance at Rs 86 crore.

Moreover, 135 patrol vehicles will be equipped with mobile surveillance cameras and the control rooms will also get a makeover with a video wall to have bird eye view of important places in the city. To detect criminals, face detection cameras will be installed at four junctions. These initiatives are part of mega city policing, a concept which was conceived nearly a decade back.
“We are giving more importance for surveillance cameras as it helps us to crack many crime incidents. The idea is to bring maximum areas under CCTV surveillance,” an official noted.
The cameras will also be installed in VVIP routes in the city. The system is expected to make monitoring of public events like temple functions, political meetings and demonstrations easier and more comprehensive. The footage will be transmitted to the city control room in real time as well as to offices of deputy commissioners and joint commissioners.
According to sources, there are 426 police booths attached to 135 police stations across the city. Each police booth will have four CCTV cameras and the facility to store the footage up to 30 days. Also, the footage will be transmitted in real time to the work stations in respective police stations. These apart, 16
Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras will be installed in four important junctions. Similarly, 15 facial recognition cameras and Perimeter Detection and Video Analytics (PDVA) cameras will be also be installed at four locations in the city. There will be separate control rooms for CCTV, PointTilt-Zoom cameras (PTZ), ANPR and PDVA cameras.
Out of the 426 booths mentioned in the project, 405 booths will be for general surveillance, four for ANPR, four for facial recognition, four booths for perimeter detection and nine booths for VVIP convoy surveillance system.
The data from all 15 face-detection cameras from the four junctions (locations) will be monitored in a central control room, where the data will also be stored. The facility to search for faces by time, date, year, camera, locations and alarm management will also be available.
With CCTV cameras playing a major role in cracking crimes and nabbing the accused, the installation of the new cameras is expected bring down the offences.
