In a first, the Tamil Nadu House in New Delhi will soon have a Tamil language teacher, a Bharathanatyam instructor and a music trainer.

Chennai:

The classes, which are expected to commence soon, will be held in Vaigai Tamil Nadu House and around 40 students are expected to be part of the course.

According to a government notification, the educational qualifications required for the part time teacher include, someone holding a post-graduate degree with BEd, one who can hold three to four classes per week for one to one-and-a-half hours per class for school children. The curriculum will involve a certificate course of basic, first level, second level of the Tamil Virtual University.

Similarly, the Bharathanatyam instructor, someone with varied teaching experience and possessing a certificate for having performed “Arangetram” (stage dance), will hold four classes a week of one to oneand-a-half hours each.

Accordingly, the subjects in the traditional dance will be “margam in Bharathanatyam, which includes Alarippu, Jatiswaram, Shapdam, Padham, Varnam and Thillana”. Likewise, the music teacher, someone who possesses a diploma in music from a recognised university with at least two years teaching experience, will also hold four classes per week. The duration of the class would be for an hour-and-a-half each.

The curriculum of Tamil music includes “Sarali, Jandai, Melsthayi, Thattu Varisai, Alankaras, Geetham, Varnam and Tamil Keerthanas”.

The old and new buildings of the Tamil Nadu House were recently renamed as Vaigai Tamil Illam and Pothigai Tamil Illam. The AIADMK government’s recent decision to rename the Tamil Nadu House in New Delhi has triggered political controversy with Opposition parties in the State, including the DMK, condemning the move.
