Akshaya Trithiya to see brisk sale this year

After a lukewarm response last year following demonetisation, jewellers in the city expect brisk sales on Akshaya Trithiya, which falls on Wednesday (April 18).

Chennai:
R Vijayaraghavan, CEO, GRT Jewellers, said that his whole team was all-prepared to handle the rush at their shop. He said, “This year we expect a rise in the sale though prices are high.  In 2017, the rush of customers was low, thanks to the demonetisation.”

Apart from stocking a vast range of designs, the showrooms have also deployed adequate number of staff to cater to all buyers in an effort to cut down the waiting time.

Uday Kumar Vummidi, partner, Vummidi Ethiraj and Sons, Exports, echoed similar expectations. “There is not just a positive sign this year, but also a lot more informed buying. Our customers today have a set design in mind and are specific about their requirements,” he said.

The jeweller said that the focus this season was more towards light weight and contemporary designs. “The big question in their mind is the resale value of the jewels. The target section is the young buyers, while the conventional older group has moved behind to offer support to this section,” he added.

The sellers said that to cash in on the upswing, they have stocked a special line crafted for the occasion and have kept a range that appeals to buyers of all segments, from two grams to 200 grams.

For Sripal Challani, director, Challani Jewellery Mart, the wedding season has also offered the much-needed boost, apart from Akshaya Trithiya. “The thrust has brought about a trend of jadau, polki, temple and antique jewellery that appeals to the current crop of buyers,” he added.
