Southern Railway to get 2nd Antyodaya train this week

Southern Railway’s (SR) first Antyodaya train, which completed its first trip to Tirunelveli from Tambaram on April 13, will not run in Chennai Railway Division for long. Highly placed SR sources told DTNext that the 22-coach (general class) LHB train set will be sent to Thiruvananthapuram division — to be operated between Kochuveli and Mangalore — shortly.

Fact File

Chennai:
The division will get the second Antyodaya train train from ICF in a few days. Another 20 plus coach LHB train with better amenities, like drinking water dispenser (two per coach — near the doorway at both ends) will be rolled out of ICF this week.

Unlike the conventional ICF coaches, Antyodaya coaches, which are capable of clocking 120kmph, have been given stainless steel slip-free flooring at the doorway and between lavatories.

The stainless-steel flooring would be wear resistant and easy to clean, making maintenance easier. That ICF had put serious thought in to designing the Antyodaya coaches. It can be comprehended from the cushion topping given to the overhead baggage racks, which, mostly double up as additional seats in unreserved coaches.

Another value addition to the unreserved Antyodaya coach is the provision of two charging points per bay, like in reserved coaches.

The additional 2.2 meter of the LHB coaches enhance the seating capacity of the Antoyadaya coach by 10 seats per coach.

The German engineered LHB coach design also has anti-telescopic effect, which prevent piling up of coaches — one of the major contributors to casualties during accidents.

Another special feature of Antyodaya coach was the emergency LED lights provided at doorways and insider compartments. The lights would glow in the event of complete power failure.
